Tended celebrates its two-year anniversary

Tended turns two today!

Tended celebrates its two-year anniversary

Bit of a tongue-twister, but it’s amazing how time flies. It doesn’t feel like that long ago that we were using Play-doh to come up with band designs and figuring out how we were going to create something that has never existed before.

We have come a long way since Tended’s first days. With our first batch of products being shipped at the end of this month, we have reached a significant milestone. Going from inception to completion in 24 months is a remarkable achievement for a hardware start-up and is a testament to our great team.

It hasn’t been without its challenges though, and we believe this is undoubtedly a cause for celebration. But before we pop the champagne, we take a look back on our achievements and share the story of how we got here.

Tended’s journey starts four years ago in Nepal

At that time, our Founder and CEO, Leo Scott Smith, was involved in the management team of a charity supporting children in Nepal’s poorest communities. In 2015, a devastating earthquake hit the country and Leo and a team of other volunteers returned to the country immediately to provide life-saving support for months following the disaster.

Leo in Nepal

It was dangerous work with unexpected aftershocks, landslides and even ambushes. He often found himself alone in remote areas, where if the unthinkable happened, he may not have been found for hours or even days.

At the same time, his mother (who lives alone) was renovating her home and fell from a high ladder. Although not seriously injured, it could have been much worse as no one was around to call for help. This led Leo to view personal safety from a different perspective, and he scoured the market to find a safety solution that could help in both situations. Unable to find one, he was inspired to start Tended and develop an adaptable safety system that could improve safety around the world.

Four years on and Leo is one step closer to reaching his goal with Tended’s first product, the Tended Protect, being shipped out in a few weeks.

Over £1.4m of investment

Back in April, we hit one of our first major milestones. We received over £1.15 million of investment from Blackfinch Ventures alongside an Innovate UK grant, bringing Tended’s total investment to date to £1.4m. Not only does the investment support the development of our products, but it’s also a great validator of our vision and strategy. With these funds, we have continued the rapid growth we have experienced over the past two years and can bring more expertise to our team.

A growing team

Thanks to that investment, we now have an amazing team of 27 people! A rapid increase in numbers has seen us outgrow three office spaces. We have now spread over two offices in Lincoln with some team members based in London and some in China to oversee manufacture.

2019 also saw the addition of Seb Chakraborty, global CTO of Hive, who has joined our board. He has remarkable experience in the tech industry, and we are thrilled to have him as part of our team.

We have big plans for the future

As we continue to grow and more people learn about what we do, we are always thinking about new products and what we can do better. We’re working alongside a couple of international insurance providers as well as huge, industry-leading companies to develop a solution to improving employee safety. Set for release in September, we plan to revolutionise safety at work and bring innovation to a space where safety is often an afterthought.

We are also looking at a range of exciting new features we can add to the Tended product line. As well as being able to detect accidents with incredibly high accuracy, we want to go one step further and are working on technology that can predict and even prevent accidents. We believe this is the future of safety.

 Tended's commercial solution

We’re looking forward to tackling the new challenges that come our way and hope to start seeing the real safety benefits that come with using our technology. In the meantime, we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us and helped us get to where we are now. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Here’s to the next two years 🥂.
