Amey Infrastructure Wales (AIW) is the latest organisation to introduce geofencing technology in Wales. Developed by safety technology company Tended, the technology is designed to specifically enhance safety and optimise efficiency within rail infrastructure projects.

As the Infrastructure Manager and Maintainer for the Core Valley Lines network, which is leased from Transport for Wales, AIW is a key player in modernising and renewing the South East Wales rail network. The organisation has been instrumental in delivering major upgrades to the Core Valley Lines, connecting Cardiff with the South Wales Valleys, serving local communities and supporting Wales' decarbonisation goals.

Continuing its commitment to transforming the Core Valley Lines into a modern, sustainable transport system, AIW is introducing geofencing to elevate the safety standards of its operations. Geofencing technology will be deployed to support trackside arborists, as well as earthworks and structures teams operating near open lines.

These critical maintenance works are often undertaken during overnight possessions, factors such as fatigue, reduced visibility and site unfamiliarity can increase the risk of workers straying beyond safe work limits. Tended’s highly accurate geofencing technology provides real-time alerts if workers leave predefined safe working boundaries, helping them regain situational awareness and preventing potential accidents.

AIW’s adoption of geofencing technology for its trackside operations underscores its commitment to safety and aligns with the company's vision of achieving zero workplace incidents. As well as the geofencing to improve worker safety, AIW will also introduce geotagging to enhance onsite operations through the real time tracking of plant, machinery and equipment locations. This will help to minimise the risk of incidents including points run throughs, objects left on the line and vehicles speeding.

Matt Silvester, Account Director at Tended, said: “Geofencing has a proven track record of enhancing safety across diverse rail environments. We've witnessed its direct impact on mitigating risks and improving situational awareness, even within well-established safety systems. We're thrilled that Amey Infrastructure Wales is embracing this technology and playing an important role in advancing worker safety in Wales.”
Stephen Womack, Head of HSEQ, from AIW added: “Geofencing is a great innovation that will support the safety of our workforce. We’re excited to integrate advanced digital solutions that create safer, more efficient working environments for our teams, while also improving reliability and minimising disruption during engineering works.”
