Therefore, protecting its trackside workforce is vital to AmcoGiffen.
Spotlight: preventing incidents involving track workers during a major installation project
Recently, our customer AmcoGiffen was involved in a major project installing a new station in Cardiff Bay on behalf of Transport for Wales. During the initial phases of the project, a potential safety hazard was identified. Specifically, there was concern that workers might lose situational awareness and fall from the platform edge, particularly in the absence of appropriate safety barriers, which are both costly and time consuming to instal and relocate, should this be required.
Innovative solution: geofencing technology
Leveraging its established relationship with AmcoGiffen, Tended was approached to provide a cutting-edge solution for the new, 180 m long platform. This request presented a unique challenge and an opportunity for Tended to pioneer new applications of geofencing technology to prevent incidents onsite.
- For the first time, Tended was tasked with creating geofences on infrastructure that had yet to be commissioned, meaning aerial survey footage was not available to guide the process
- Instead, utilising high-precision location data, Tended collaborated with AmcoGiffen to establish a geofence positioned at a safe distance from the platform edge
- The device was configured to trigger alerts for workers who approached or strayed too close to the platform edge
- This proactive alert system helped maintain situational awareness among workers and reduced the risk of accidental falls and injuries
Enhancing safety
The implementation of geofencing technology on the new platform provided a significant safety enhancement to the worksite. Individuals were alerted if they came too close to the platform edge, improving their situational awareness and helping to mitigate the risk of falls.
Geofences can be adjusted and relocated on Tended's Dashboard with ease and within seconds, providing flexibility and reducing the need for physical barriers that can be costly and labor-intensive to move.

By partnering with Tended to implement cutting-edge geofencing technology, AmcoGiffen demonstrated its proactive approach to addressing safety risks in even the most challenging environments.
