While many people were enjoying a well-earned break over the festive period, essential rail teams across the UK were working flat out to deliver critical infrastructure upgrades. This Christmas, Tended was proud to play a key role in supporting those works alongside our partner RSS Infrastructure (RSSI), helping to enhance safety, visibility, and efficiency during one of the busiest and most demanding times in the rail calendar.

From 20th December through to New Year, we saw record use of Tended’s geofencing system across the UK:

  • 449 different devices were deployed
  • Over 15,000 hours of device use between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day
  • New Year’s Day alone was our busiest ever, with 4,849 hours of use
  • A total of 690 days of device time in just 16 days

These figures clearly reflect both the intensity of Christmas rail works and the trust our customers place in Tended during critical operations.

Supporting major projects across the network

Throughout the festive period, Tended’s geofencing system was used by multiple organisations to enhance safety and operational efficiency on complex rail projects. Christmas is a vital delivery window for the rail industry, and our technology helped teams complete work safely and on time so that normal services could resume for passengers as quickly as possible.

Tended's geofencing system supported several major projects over the Christmas period

South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA)

The majority of this activity took place on the SRSA project at Dolphin Junction near Slough, delivered alongside RSSI.

This was Tended’s largest project to date, with almost 300 geofencing devices deployed during a 10-day blockade. Dolphin Junction is an exceptionally busy location, with up to 14 trains per hour operating during normal service. Tended’s technology supported the safe and efficient delivery of a major points renewal scheme, helping ensure the railway reopened on schedule for passengers.

Network Rail Wales & Borders

Over this period, we also worked closely with Network Rail Wales & Borders Construction Services to support essential S&C refurbishment works at Cardiff Central, where two of the busiest sets of points in Wales were being replaced.

Despite the complexity and scale of the activity, all works were delivered safely and in line with the agreed programme, ensuring the railway could be handed back on time. Tended’s geofencing technology played a key role in enhancing both safety and efficiency throughout these works, giving Engineering Supervisors clear, real-time visibility of work groups and plant movements across site, supporting better coordination and proactive decision-making. The system also helped teams maintain safe separation from open lines, with alerts reinforcing worksite limits during a demanding delivery window.

‘During this blockade over Christmas, I’ve had nothing but positive feedback for Tended and how the team has handled explaining the device and how it needs to be used on and off site. With regards to keeping people safe during a worksite, I absolutely agree with all areas of the Tended device. It keeps me on my toes within my work limits and also gives me confidence throughout the site. I'd definitely use it again if I had the opportunity to. Thank you for all your help and advice over Christmas.’ - Liam Williams Team Leader, Network Rail Works Delivery Wales

Collaboration and commitment to safety

Tended also worked with other customers over the Christmas period, using our geofencing technology to enhance efficiency and safety on essential works, helping teams deliver critical projects on time across the UK:

  • SPL Scotland
  • Siemens
  • AmcoGiffen

Beyond the technology itself, what stood out most was the engagement and commitment of the teams on the ground. We received fantastic feedback from our customers, reinforcing the real-world value of geofencing in high-pressure, safety-critical environments.

Tended is incredibly proud to have assisted with the safe and efficient delivery of so many essential rail projects and the people delivering them, helping keep workers safe while enabling vital improvements to the network. We’d like to thank our geofencing partner RSSI for ensuring the technology was supported 24/7 throughout some of these projects, including the major SRSA blockade and Network Rail Wales & Borders.
