As 2024 comes to an end, we reflect on a year marked by innovation, collaboration, and meaningful contributions to the railway industry. From pioneering cutting-edge safety technologies to taking on personal challenges for charity, this year has been one for the books and we could not be prouder of everyone at Tended.
Join us as we take a look back at our team’s biggest achievements throughout the year.
Customer success stories with geofencing
This year saw the expansion of our geofencing technology into 3 new countries:
- Netherlands expansion with Dual Inventive: In collaboration with Dutch rail technology provider Dual Inventive, we introduced geofencing to the Netherlands for the first time. Since then, we’ve been spending time over in the Netherlands, testing our system all over the country.
- Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail: For the past few months, we have partnered with AMC Training & Consultancy Ltd to deliver geofencing across Ireland's rail network with our customer Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail. This marks the first time our system has been used on Irish infrastructure, helping to enhance worksite safety and project efficiency. Through this partnership, Irish Rail has been able to elevate their safety standards even further. Read their full case study here.
- SPL Powerlines Scotland: This year we’ve worked with our customer SPL Powerlines Scotland team to demonstrate the value of our technology and the improvements it can bring to safety and worksite efficiency. During this time, we worked closely with planning and track teams to implement geofencing for various rail projects in Scotland.
As well as this, we’ve been doing plenty with our customers right here in England!
- Network Rail North and East: Network Rail’s North and East route covers Yorkshire’s biggest cities and provides vital links over the region. Upgrades to this important route are essential, and major projects like The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) are improving connectivity, helping to support economic growth. To help enhance the safety of those conducting these essential maintenance and upgrade projects, the route has been using Tended to improve worksite visibility.
- AmcoGiffen: Our customer AmcoGiffen was involved in a major project installing a new station in Cardiff Bay on behalf of Transport for Wales. During these works, they used geofencing technology to help prevent safety incidents involving track workers, demonstrating AmcoGiffen’s unwavering dedication to workforce safety and innovation.
- Siemens nationwide rollout: In a groundbreaking partnership, Siemens Mobility adopted our geofencing technology across all UK rail projects, demonstrating their leadership in safety innovation. This collaboration exemplifies how our solutions can transform trackside safety and operational efficiency on a large scale.
Award-winning success
This year, Tended’s innovative geofencing technology earned prestigious recognition:
- SPOTLIGHT Rail Award for Commitment to Safety: Our collaboration with RSS Infrastructure was celebrated for its transformative impact on the railway industry.
- Siemens Supplier Award for Technology and Innovation: At the Siemens Supplier Conference, we were honoured with this accolade, recognising our contributions to our customer Siemens’ global vision.
Our customers also shone brightly this year, with Irish Rail’s David Flynn and Siemens’ Eddie Bell and Mike Sharp winning major awards for their leadership in implementing Tended’s technology to enhance safety and innovation.
Navigating change: our inaugural Innovation Summit
In October, we hosted our first-ever Innovation Summit at the National Railway Museum, bringing together 150 industry leaders, change-makers, and tech pioneers to discuss how innovation can drive safety.
Expert speakers, including our keynote Bethany Holroyd, highlighted the challenges and opportunities we must overcome to create long-lasting change, driving safety and effective risk management. The conference explored innovative strategies, shared success stories, and discussed emerging trends that will shape our approach to innovation. Then, in the evening, guests were invited back to the museum’s Great Hall for a charity fundraiser casino night with drinks and food, again in aid of the Railway Children raising a fantastic £1,550.
After the huge success of this event, we very much look forward to hosting it again next year. Register here to be the first to know when bookings go live.
Industry-shaping events
Throughout the year, we participated in a whole host of leading rail events, including RIA and RIN events, Rail Safety week and Rail Live. During these, we were able to demonstrate Tended's geofencing technology alongside other transformative innovations and address key challenges the industry faces.
This is in addition to many safety days, customer supplier forums and innovation showcases that we have also taken part in, helping to drive conversations around safety and efficiency in the rail industry.
Uniting for a cause: the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge
In May, we partnered with MacRail to conquer the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge for our charity partner Railway Children and in memory of our late colleague, Matt Handford. Together, 24 of us scaled Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough, walking 24 miles and ascending a total of 1,585 meters, all within a single day. The challenge pushed us to our physical and mental limits, but our determination and shared mission to support the Railway Children charity kept us going.
Thanks to the incredible support of our network, we raised an incredible £6,486, helping to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable children. This experience reminded us of the power of teamwork and the importance of giving back. And it was, of course, a wonderful opportunity for us to do something in memory of our colleague Matt.
This year we raised a total of £8,036 for our charity partner Railway Children. An incredible effort from everyone for a wonderful cause that supports vulnerable children across the world.

As we step into 2025, we remain committed to our customers and our mission of transforming safety standards to make a positive impact across the railway industry and beyond. Here’s to another year of innovation, teamwork, and success!
