South Rail Systems Alliance Slough

Tended working in partnership with RSSI to deliver geofencing for SRSA
Background

South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA) carried out the largest deployment of geofencing devices to date to support a complex 12-day S&C renewal blockade at Dolphin Junction in Slough. Delivered in partnership with RSS Infrastructure (RSSI), Tended’s system was deployed in a highly dynamic rail environment where possession limits changed daily, increasing the risk of inadvertent movement onto open rail lines.

Objectives

  • Ensure the safe management of workforce and asset movements amid daily changes to possession limits
  • Minimise the risk of inadvertent access to open lines during possession changes
  • Reduce the risk of incorrect use of access and egress routes
  • Decrease reliance on briefings and manual controls in a high-risk environment
  • Support SRSA in delivering the renewal safely, efficiently, and on schedule
Solution

Tended’s technology was deployed at scale and delivered by RSSI as a fully managed geofencing solution. The technology was configured to align with the phased possession strategy, with geofence zones updated daily to reflect the evolving blockade timeline.

A key challenge involved managing the movements of assets and the workforce as possession boundaries shifted. Areas that were blocked one day could be live the next, requiring time-based controls to help mitigate the risk of teams straying outside safe working limits. Strict management of access routes was also essential to help reduce the risk of workers using prohibited entry points.

Tended’s time-phased geofencing capability was used to address this challenge, and RSSI implemented a solution aligned to the possession strategy, combining real-time alerts and live asset visibility. This enabled dynamic risk management while maintaining productivity, with over 250 devices live at peak and no access irregularities recorded.

Results

Outcomes and benefits

  • Tended’s geofencing platform was configured to adapt to daily changes in open lines
  • Multiple safe and unsafe zones were created, including  alert zones around prohibited access points which would alert staff if they attempted to use them
  • Audible and visual alerts were delivered by Tended’s devices to warn individuals attempting unsafe or incorrect access
  • The Engineering Supervisor (ES) had live visibility of plant and equipment movements using asset-mounted Tended’s devices
  • Real-time Dashboard monitoring was used to support immediate intervention where required
  • A live view of the workiste on the Dashboard helped support team briefings and mitigate human error
  • SRSA achieved zero access irregularities despite constantly changing possession limits
  • Geofencing supported real-time decision-making during renewal issues, helping SRSA maintain safety and deliver the project on time

Jason Fidoe Technical Manager, Track Warning Systems at RSS Infrastructure said: “This was one of the most complex blockade environments we’ve supported. With possession limits changing daily, geofencing gave both the workforce and site leadership real-time assurance that access was being controlled correctly. It allowed the project team to adapt safely to change while keeping the programme moving.”
